The Drum
An Education that Values the Arts
An Education that Values the Arts

As we return from the holiday break and begin Term 4, there is a familiar sense of anticipation across the school. The final term of the year is always one of our busiest and most celebratory. It is a time when learning becomes visible through performances, showcases, exhibitions and events, and when we gather as a community to acknowledge both accomplishment and milestone.
Over the coming weeks, families can look forward to the Family Fair, student showcases, performances and plays, celebrations of learning, information evenings and orientation events for 2027, the Year 12 Graduation, and, of course, our much-loved staff-performed Shepherd’s Play and the annual Carol Service. These occasions provide opportunities not only to celebrate what our students have brought about, but also to strengthen the connections that make our community so special.
This term begins with particularly exciting news. We are delighted to congratulate Year 12 student Jasmine Lancaster Merton who has been crowned the winner of ABC TV's Portrait Artist of the Year (Season 2), earning national recognition for her artistic talent and creativity. Jasmine impressed judges and audiences throughout the competition with her technical skill, artistic vision and ability to capture the character of her subjects. Read more here.
Jasmine's achievement provides a wonderful reminder of the importance of an education that values the arts, not as an optional extra, but as an essential part of human development. In a Steiner school, creativity is woven through every stage of learning. As I wrote earlier this year, creativity is not simply about producing artistic works; it is about nurturing imagination, curiosity, perseverance and the capacity to bring ideas into meaningful form. Through story, music, movement, handcraft, visual arts and rich intellectual inquiry, students are encouraged to engage with the world as active creators rather than passive consumers.
Jasmine's success is a testament to her own dedication, talent and hard work, supported by her family, teachers and the wider school community. It also stands as a powerful example of what can emerge when young people are given the time, encouragement and confidence to develop their creative capacities. We are incredibly proud of all that she has achieved and look forward to following her artistic journey in the years ahead.
Finally, this week marks another significant milestone as our Year 12 students commence their HSC Examinations. After years of commitment, growth and perseverance, they now enter the final stage of their school journey. On behalf of the entire Glenaeon community, I wish each of them calm minds, confidence in their preparation and the ability to approach each examination with courage and perspective. Regardless of the results that lie ahead, we are immensely proud of the thoughtful, capable and resilient young people they have become.
I wish all families a wonderful start to Term 4 and look forward to sharing this final chapter of the school year together.
Warmly,
Diana Drummond

At the Glenaeon Family Fair, just two hours of your time can make a huge difference. Each year, hundreds of small contributions come together to create one big, colourful and very special day for our community. And this year, we’d love you to be part of it. Whether you’re a parent, staff member, student in Years 9–12, or part of the wider Glenaeon community, there’s a place for you. Most volunteer spots are simple, essential 2-hour shifts across the Fair weekend, including:
Friday: Fair setup
Saturday: Fair Day stalls, activities and support
Sunday: Pack-down
Please visit the Volunteer Roster here: https://bit.ly/gffsup26
Choose the stall, activity or task that suits you, select your preferred time and follow the prompts to sign up. It only takes a couple of minutes, and no account or login is required. You can also sign up for family members or others at the same time. Once registered, you’ll receive a confirmation and reminder email, with SMS reminders available if selected.
A few things to know:
- A Volunteer Declaration for child safety may need to be completed where required: https://bit.ly/gffdec26
- CIP credits apply for parent volunteers. After the Fair, parents will need to submit the hours they volunteered so they can be recorded against their family’s Glenaeon fee account. Learn more about CIP credits here: https://bit.ly/glenaeon-cip
Pick a shift and join in!
Whether you can spare two hours or more, your contribution really does make the Fair possible. It is also one of the best ways to get involved, meet other families and be part of what makes the Glenaeon Fair such a special community event.

Jasmine Lancaster is the ABC's Portrait Artist of the Year Winner
Jasmine Lancaster is the ABC's Portrait Artist of the Year Winner
We are thrilled to announce that Glenaeon Year 12 student Jasmine Lancaster Merton has been crowned the winner of ABC TV’s Portrait Artist of the Year Season 2! Competing with talented artists from across Australia, Jasmine captivated the judges and audiences with her exceptional technical skill, artistic vision and remarkable ability to capture the character and personality of her subjects.
For Jasmine, the experience was both challenging and rewarding:
“Taking part in the competition pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me grow as an artist. Winning the title is an incredible honour, and I'm grateful for the support of my family, teachers and the entire school community throughout the journey.”
Jasmine also reflects on the creative freedom and encouragement she has experienced at Glenaeon:
“It is a school where in my art, I really get to let loose. The teachers at Glenaeon put in a lot of effort to know and care for each student. They don’t dissuade me from being my own creative person.”
We couldn’t be prouder of Jasmine and this extraordinary achievement. Her success is a wonderful reflection of her talent, dedication and hard work, as well as the support of her family and the strength of Glenaeon’s Visual Arts program. As Jasmine completes Year 12, we can’t wait to see where her artistic journey takes her next.
Jasmine's commissioned portrait of Australian actress, singer, author and television host, Justine Clarke is now hanging in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. We encourage our community to go visit the gallery to support Jasmine!

Kindergarten Spring Festival
Kindergarten Spring Festival

At the end of last term, the Kindergarten Spring Festival was not dampened by a little rain! Parents worked together to prepare the festival inside the hall, which was beautifully decorated with flowers and bunting.
The kindergarten children had been preparing and practising their Spring Circle for a number of weeks and were delighted to share it with their families. Spring songs, dancing and colourful ribbons, followed by a shared picnic, made to celebrate the season and end the term together.
Here is spring, here is spring,
Children are dancing in a ring.
We're all dancing in a ring.

Year 12 Visit Castlecrag for their Final Walk Around

Returning to where their school journey began, our Year 12 students visited the Castlecrag campus in their final week to bid farewell to the Kindergarten - Class 3 children in person. It was a beautiful opportunity to reconnect across the generations of our school community, sharing morning circle, songs and beautiful memories. The Year 12s and their Guardians were also kindly invited into the classrooms to share in the learning journey and reminded of how far they have come at Glenaeon. It was a nourishing morning for our younger students too, as they were able to look up to the Year 12s and look forward to their continuing journey at Glenaeon. We wish our Year 12s every blessing as they prepare for the next chapter.

Year 7 2027 Welcome Picnic
Year 7 2027 Welcome Picnic

Last term, our future Year 7 students and their families gathered for a picnic, a wonderful occasion to get to know one another before the start of their high school journey. We were delighted to welcome families from our current Class 6 cohort, along with several new families who will be joining our community in 2027.
On a beautiful spring afternoon, our Class 6 parent, Deahne Moore, created a great sense of fun and excitement through a range of icebreaker activities and games as students spent time together, many meeting future classmates for the first time. Events such as these play an important role in helping students feel known, connected and confident as they prepare for the move to high school.
The afternoon was not just for students. Parents, siblings and grandparents also enjoyed the chance to meet one another and begin building the relationships that are such an important part of the Glenaeon community. We extend our sincere thanks to the GPA for hosting the event, and particularly to Deahne Moore and Sou Ewins for their warm hospitality and organisation. Their efforts helped create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that was enjoyed by all.
We look forward to continuing to support our future Year 7 students and their families as they prepare for this exciting next chapter, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone again at our Term 4 Orientation events:
- Year 7 (2027) Parent Information Evening: Wednesday 21 October, 6.30pm
- Year 7 (2027) Student Orientation Day: Friday 23 October (detailed information to follow soon)
Year 10 & 11 Students Sea Kayak the Whitsundays
Year 10 & 11 Students Sea Kayak the Whitsundays

Spending time in a place like the Whitsundays offers far more than an outdoor adventure. For our group of 12 students, accompanied by instructors KG and Ben, the recent sea kayaking expedition became an opportunity to slow down, tune into the rhythms of the natural world, and experience life on nature’s timetable.
Throughout the journey, students quickly discovered that success on the water comes from working with the environment rather than against it. Each day was shaped by the movement of the tides, and the strength and direction of the wind, which delivered us some challenging conditions. Learning to read natural cycles helped students develop patience, adaptability and a deeper appreciation for the forces that have shaped these islands for thousands of years.
The Whitsundays provided a spectacular classroom. Students embraced the challenges of expedition life, supporting one another as they packed equipment, prepared meals and navigated across open water. Their resilience, teamwork and positive attitude were on display throughout the trip.
For the keen early risers, one of the highlights came before dawn. Rising while most of the camp still slept, small groups climbed out of their tents and made their way to viewpoints to watch the sunrise over the islands. As the first light spread across the horizon and illuminated the sea below, students were treated to a moment of stillness and beauty that few will soon forget.
While the kilometres paddled and campsites visited were certainly memorable, it was these quieter moments that often left the greatest impression. The expedition encouraged students to look up, slow down and notice the world around them, whether it was the changing weather, the rhythm of the waves, or the movement of the moon and sun across the sky.
We are incredibly proud of the way all 12 students approached the experience. Their willingness to embrace challenge, support one another and engage fully with the environment made the trip a resounding success. The Whitsundays offered many lessons, but perhaps the most valuable was learning to appreciate and work in harmony with the rhythms of the natural world.
