This August, the Kindergarten children have been busy preparing fires in the fire pit each week, finding twigs, snapping branches and working together to build a chimney for the fire. Once the fire is ready, we take our damper dough and pat, pat, pat it around our long sticks. Then comes the patient waiting by the fire, carefully turning our bread together as it slowly cooks. When the damper is just right, golden brown and crispy, we enjoy it warm with honey. It is so yummy!

Class 1 recently delighted audiences with their performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , inspired by the beloved Grimm Brothers’ fairy tale. The children worked wonderfully together to bring their first school play to life and thoroughly enjoyed performing for their family and friends. It was a joy for families to see the children shine on stage, making it a truly special and memorable moment in the school year.

Each week, Class 3 take part in a rotational program of gardening, cooking and building. The children have started constructing their Class 3 building project which is a greenhouse for the new garden area. With parent volunteer, David, they were able to learn about and help measure the foundations to be level. Each week they will build on this project until the greenhouse is complete at the end of the year. In gardening with teacher Kate Flood, they are tending to our beautiful plants, watering, weeding and preparing for spring. They made some warming tea with herbs from the garden and lemons from the tree! In cooking with Class Teacher Emily Watts the children are cooking seasonal recipes based on fresh ingredients. This week they made delicious pumpkin and spinach scones. They keep a lovely recipe book of their creations and are practicing measurement, weighing and writing.

Class 5 recently completed their introduction to Greek Mythology, immersing themselves in the stories, characters and ideas of Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece was a time of remarkable cultural development, with new ways of thinking about art, society, philosophy, mathematics and government. Through the myths, students encountered a world of powerful gods and goddesses who were far from perfect displaying human qualities such as jealousy, courage, pride, love and curiosity. These stories offered plenty of opportunities for the children to explore the complexities of human nature and the choices we make. At this stage of childhood, Class 5 students are beginning to experience their own growing independence and a new awareness of the world around them. The rich imagery and drama of Greek mythology provide a wonderful way to engage their imaginations while introducing them to the ideas and culture of the ancient world.

Building on their Ancient Civilisations studies, Class 6 students have recently immersed themselves in the fascinating world of Ancient Rome. Each student chose an aspect of Roman life that sparked their curiosity, researching their chosen topic before presenting their findings in a detailed report and creative artistic representation.

Their projects explored a range of themes, including Roman society and entertainment, architecture and engineering, transport and roads, conflict and military life, farming and food production. The finished works showcase both the depth of their research and their creativity. with students producing detailed models, artistic posters and other thoughtful representations of life in Ancient Rome.

Year 7 have enjoyed a very hands-on main lesson, learning about the “simple machines” that underlie all labour-saving devices; the lever, the inclined plane, and the wheel, especially in its application as the pulley. Comparing the degree of exertion needed to lift or transport heavy weights unassisted and the reduction of effort brought about when we utilise the simple machines. Students worked together to move and lift under the guidance of 'Oswald' the mechanic!

This week is National Science Week, and to celebrate our Year 8 students have been getting hands-on with biology as they continue their study of the classification of living things. Having explored the world of plants, students have now turned their attention to animals, investigating the characteristics that help scientists group and classify them. Classification is an important scientific process for identifying and organising living things based on their shared characteristics.

On a beautiful day, the students headed into the garden to become wildlife detectives, searching for small creatures to observe and study. Their finds included native bees, bull ants, spiders, caterpillars and plenty of other fascinating garden inhabitants.

The bugs were carefully collected in specimen jars and brought back to the lab, where students could observe them more closely and begin the process of classification. How many legs did they have? Six or eight? Could they fly, crawl or both? Were they insects, or did they belong to another animal group?

With plenty of questions, close observation and a few exciting discoveries along the way, the lesson brought classification to life, proving that sometimes the best science can be found right outside the classroom door. National Science Week runs from 15–23 August 2026 and celebrates science across Australia.

Whilst we still await the official results from Wednesday’s ISD Athletics Carnival, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest another great day on the track for our Glenaeon track and field athletes. Our team of 35, made up of volunteer athletes from Years 7-11 were exceptionally well led by Sports Leaders Finn, Emily and Lenny who showed the way with strong performances but more importantly provided support, encouragement and advice to our younger athletes throughout the day. The huge amount of smiles and a collective total of 43 ribbons tallied up on the jubilant bus ride home will undoubtedly mean a chance for our athletes to compete at the next level of athletics in the pathway: Representing ISD at the AICES Championships.

We are delighted to share that Y12 student Sara H. will be taking to the stage next month in Miranda Musical Theatre Company’s community production of the much-loved musical West Side Story .

Sara has been cast as Francisca, one of the Shark Girls, in this exciting production, which marks the return of West Side Story to Sydney community theatre after more than a decade. The talented cast of emerging performers will bring the iconic story of love, rivalry and friendship to life at the 680-seat Pavilion Performing Arts Centre in Sutherland from 16 - 20 September.

Audiences will have the chance to see Sara perform alongside the Shark Girls in two of the show’s much-loved musical numbers, America and I Feel Pretty . We congratulate Sara on this wonderful creative achievement and wish her all the best for their upcoming performances!

Each year, we reach out to our Parents and Carers community to gather insights on your and your child’s school experience. The 2026 Parent Experience Survey will be open for the whole of Week 7, and we warmly encourage all parents and carers to participate in this valuable feedback process. Survey participation is fully anonymous. Communication from the Head of School introducing the 2026 survey will be sent in the coming days.

The GPA Steering Committee met again this week and we’ll have a recap in the next newsletter (highlights of last meeting shared here in case you missed it).

The Class Parents Forum for Term 3 was held last week in Glenaeon’s Senior Library and hosted by Sou Ewins – Class Parents Mentor, Steering Committee member and Year 9 parent. Diana Drummond joined Sou and the Class Parents for this important opportunity to share information, answer questions, discuss issues, and acknowledge successes of significance to parent communities across our school.

Key points covered in this Forum:

Open discussion with Diana on how the school and community are responding to the current and emerging developments with AI, social media, and use of devices/technology – including practical issues and next steps (and please read Diana’s note here if you missed it).

Update on “Creating a Thriving Culture at Glenaeon” (Parent Education evening held recently), including a parent guidebook which is currently being developed.

Thanking the Class Parents in Years 7 and 9, as organisers of the 2026 Mid-Winter Party & Silent Auction, for their wonderful work which ultimately funded the GPA’s contributions to the school of requests to support new musical instruments and playground equipment this year ( see newsletter ).

Reviewing the 2026 Mid-Winter Party & Silent Auction with an open discussion on what went well and improvements suggested for next year.

Updating on the 2026 Family Fair, noting planning is overall on track and challenges being addressed by the Fair Coordinators. The Fair Coordinators are keen to engage more interested high school students as volunteers and contributors for this year’s Fair and currently discussing with the school.

Discussion around the ongoing challenges of making the various formal and informal communication channels work best for the parent community.

So many parents and staff in the Glenaeon community are already working hard to bring the 2026 Fair to life:

- The GPA Fair Committee led by Class 4 parents Sylvia, Amelia, Eva, Huw and Ben as Fair Coordinators, Nick as Fair Mentor, Aimee (Glenaeon staff) as Fair Manager, supported by more volunteers and staff

- 18 Activity Coordinators (a few more still needed), 24 Stall Coordinators, 8 coordinators of other areas – parent volunteers busy organising behind the scenes

- The Parent Craft community who has been busily creating beautiful pieces since shortly after last year’s Fair (led by Carolina, Clare, Cintia, Elianna and Charlotte)

- Class communities who have taken on roles for the Fair and are quietly working on their contributions

- Teachers and other staff working with colleagues, students and parents on tasks and contributions for the Fair

- Class Parents who support the Fair in so many ways not least with communication

Thank you to one and all for everything thus far!

Parent Craft have been busy making beautiful things for the school fair in November. They have made the most wonderful pencil cases, token bags, ornaments, animals, Autumn fairies, crowns and beautiful moon cycle and felted advent calendars. Organised by our craft volunteer parents, it is a wonderful coming together of our parents and families who are so creative. Look out for our workshops which happen mostly on Friday mornings at our Castlecrag Campus. This week, parents are making wet filtered pictures which will be embroidered next week. If you are interested in coming to Parent Craft please contact castlecrag@glenaeon.nsw.edu.au or phone 02 9958 0774. We welcome everyone and it is held in a warm space with an enclosed garden area for young children.

Beyond the sessions offered at Glenaeon, parents and carers are warmly invited to take part in the inspiring workshops and talks hosted by the Steiner Parent Education Initiative. Upcoming sessions are shared regularly in our Newsletter. As part of our ongoing commitment to meaningful parent engagement, Glenaeon parents and carers are able to attend these events free of charge .
