It's time to get your CIP points in for Term 3 - due by Wednesday 18 September 2019

Dear Parents,
It’s time to start submitting your term 3 CIPs now! You can start submitting any time from now until Wednesday 18 September 2019. No submissions will be accepted after this cut-off date.
Each family is billed $140 per term for the Community Involvement Program. When voluntary work is done and registered, it can be credited back to your account at the rate of $17.50 per hour (in other words 8 hours per term will entitle you to the full $140 credit). As there are many families at Glenaeon it takes some time to process the credits for everybody so we ask that you submit your form on time to have them credited back to you.
The CIP form is available online so it’s very simple to do! Simply click on this link https://www.glenaeon.nsw.edu.au/community-involvement-program/ , complete the form and hit ‘submit’. Alternatively, paper forms are also available in the CIP folder held at reception - please fill them out manually and hand them in at reception.
Note, you must submit your CIP hours worked regardless of which committee/event/role you participate in or hold. Please refer page 34 of the Parent Handbook for more details (including what tasks are eligible for CIP credit). Note that credits are not carried over from one year to the next.

Year 8 Group Science Projects

Year 8 are designing and performing their own experiments in small groups in order to demonstrate and explore a chosen scientific principle. Here, the students are measuring the conductivity of heat through different substances (soy sauce, vinegar and water) and noting results accordingly.
Another group is exploring how current moves through different citrus fruits, hypothesising how the voltage inside the fruits is affected by oxidation and pH levels. Supervised by Science teacher Hernan Carol-Garis, these group projects are thought-provoking as students learn the processes of scientific inquiry and recording experiments.

HSC Music Showcase
HSC Music Showcase

Sky Boe and Natasha Petit at the HSC Music Showcase
Last Friday evening, the Year 12 Music students Bryn Arnold, Jasper Brown, Naomi Hicks and Sky Boe performed items from the their HSC Music performance programs. The audience was treated to a wide variety of styles ranging from Music Theatre to Baroque Opera. The students have worked so hard to produce these amazingly polished performances and the audience was suitably impressed!
Many teachers and coaches have put in a lot of effort to get the students to where they are today, including musician parents Alan Hicks, Narelle Yeo, Phil Arnold and Christine Young.
We wish them all the best for their upcoming HSC exams.

Hosts needed for Japanese students in November 2019
Hosts needed for Japanese students in November 2019

Dear Glenaeon Parents,
In November, our school will host a group of students aged around 15 from the Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese students will take part in morning English lessons at our school, while afternoons will be an opportunity for excursion and joint classroom lessons with Glenaeon students.
We’d like to offer our visitors a chance to experience Australian hospitality in our homes here in Glenaeon.
This will give them the opportunity to practice their English in a relaxed and friendly environment. Japanese students staying in your family would be included in normal family afternoon and weekend activities, and would travel to school with their host family “sister” or “brother”.
The main expense involved will be to provide meals for the visiting student (including lunch). Families will be paid $50.00 per day per student in advance to cover these costs. If you are interested in hosting a student for a period of 10 nights between November 10 - 20, 2019, please contact either Mrs Keiko Takahashi, the Japanese teacher or Mr Takashi Ushinohama, the Homestay Coordinator as below.

REPAIR CAFES
Repair Cafés are free meeting places to mend your clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, toys, et cetera with an expert volunteer.
We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, and which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. This reduces the volume of raw materials and energy needed to make new products. It cuts CO2 emissions, for example, because manufacturing new products and recycling old ones causes CO2 to be released.
The Repair Café teaches people to see their possessions in a new light. And, once again, to appreciate their value. The Repair Café helps change people’s mindset. This is essential to kindle people’s enthusiasm for a sustainable society.
But most of all, the Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is. Why don’t you give it a go?
Check online for a Repair Café near you.

Glen-X 20 year reunion celebration
Glen-X 20 year reunion celebration

Glenaeon was delighted to welcome back students who graduated from Glenaeon in 1999. The 20 year GlenX celebration was held on Saturday 24th August on the deck under the stars, using the beautiful new night lighting. It was wonderful to see so many people return and share their memories of Glenaeon.
Andrew Hill took them on a tour of the campus and they reminisced about their time here and were amazed how much it has changed over the past 20 years. Before the campus expanded up to Castlecrag, Kindergarten was at the top of the Middle Cove driveway, where Class 5 now is, and students moved slowly down the hill as they grew older. The Alumni enjoyed a some food together on the deck, sharing stories and news from their past and present lives. We welcome Alumni always to Glenaeon, and warmly invite you to come and visit whenever you can - you don't need wait 20 years!

Lefrench Club's Methodology is based on informal, fun activities, such as crafts, music and songs, lively games, weekly activity sheets for each child, and progress reports for parents to reinforce at home (via email).
This interactive and communicative approach is supported by professionally designed materials including flashcards, board games and activity sheets.
The Club’s method makes learning fun and stress-free. While children play games, sing songs, act out role plays and interact with each other, they absorb the new language without consciously thinking about it. Naturally this all takes place within a carefully structured progressive sequence which enhances learning

Glenaeon Primary School Hall, 121 Edinburgh Road, Castlecrag.
Topic: Where is our urban forest? How the idea of the “urban forest” relates to Willoughby and its future planning?
Trees have never been so topical – the importance of the tree cover over our suburbs has become a focus for much city-wide discussion as we deal with the health impacts of rising temperatures and the sharp decline in wildlife habitat.

Talk by Joan Sleigh from the Gotheaneum speaking about the 'Social Initiative Forum'
Talk by Joan Sleigh from the Gotheaneum speaking about the 'Social Initiative Forum'

This Sunday, September 8, from 2 – 4 pm at The Christian Community, 8 Montague at Balmain. Joan will speak following the morning service and social break.
Joan Sleigh is a very experienced Steiner teacher and now an member of the Executive Council of the General Anthroposophical Society. She is one of the leaders and contact person for the English speaking world at the Goetheaneum. She is currently in Australia and presenting a talk this coming Sunday at 8 Montague St, Balmain from 2 - 4pm.
She will be speaking about the ‘Social Initiative Forum’, which is a collective movement aiming to unite people in a common cause and future, moving away from the individual pursuits of more money, possessions or superficial ambitions? In her words:
“Given that many pursue superficial ambitions in politics and society – more money, more power, more influence over others – one can suggest that it is time to open the door to the inside where each of us can discover their creative potential.”
Please see: http://socialinitiativeforum.org/ for information on what the Social Initiative Forum is and http://socialinitiativeforum.org/what-we-do/ for what we do.
Do you find yourself saying:
“I don’t have time”
“There is nothing I can do about it” or
“Things are so complex I don’t understand them” ?
Joan explores the 3 endless chasms that can develop out of these statements, and some practical solutions such as ‘deceleration’, taking time and creating an inner space, learning to accept one’s own anxieties as a starting point for change and moving forward with confidence. She speaks of standing by one another, especially those that are alone, conveying strength and positivity in our current times.
It is sure to be an interesting talk, and all are welcome to attend.

Soul Man: “…each encounter makes me want to deepen our acquaintance”
Soul Man: “…each encounter makes me want to deepen our acquaintance”

As we celebrate the origins of Steiner education 100 years ago, it’s also worth re-examining the remarkable work of Dr Rudolf Steiner himself. Here’s an interesting article from the New York Times I came across some years ago which describes an exhibition of Steiner’s work.
Douglas Brenner is a Steiner educated student himself and is now a well know author and writer on design topics in the US. His article gives a personal reflection on the originality and remarkable diversity of Steiner’s work across so many disciplines.
Remember our Glenaeon celebrations of the centenary of Steiner education at Castlecrag on Saturday September 14th. Details are on the flyers later in the Newsletter.
Please share this event with family and friends who may be interested in a glimpse into the wonderful world of childhood that Steiner education promotes and delivers. We welcome all parents and friends of the Steiner education impulse, a healing and enlivening impulse in the world.
Soul Man: “…each encounter makes me want to deepen our acquaintance”
Douglas Brenner
New York Times, April 7th, 2010
By age 12, I had a rote reply for grown-ups’ quizzical looks when they heard I went to a Steiner (Waldorf) school: “It’s based on the ideas of Rudolf Steiner.” Blank stare. “He was an Austrian philosopher who believed in teaching the whole student — mind, body and soul.” Luckily no one ever asked me to elaborate, because I’d have been at a loss for words — except to say that we students got to do lots of drawing and painting, which I loved, but we couldn’t skip Eurythmy class (yuck). Any serious discussions of pedagogic method and what Steiner called his “spiritual science,” anthroposophy, took place out of earshot in the teachers’ room. My only mental picture of Steiner (1861-1925) came from a dim black and white photo showing a stern mouth and X-ray eyes that made me glad this guy wasn’t our headmaster. Oh, well, I reasoned, as soon as I enter the real world after graduation, it’s Goodbye, Dr Steiner.
In fact, decades later, I keep bumping into him, and each encounter makes me want to deepen our acquaintance. A gardener I met praised the ecological marvels of biodynamic farming, a Steiner innovation. An art historian introduced me to the Goetheanum, a temple-like edifice that Steiner — an expert on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s theories of natural metamorphosis and the physiology of colour — designed to anchor the anthroposophical colony in Dornach, Switzerland.
An English professor pointed out that Saul Bellow had been a Steiner devotee. These were mere hints, though, compared with the insights I expect to gain from “Rudolf Steiner: Alchemy of the Everyday,” a traveling exhibition organized by the Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with the Kunstmuseums of Wolfsburg and Stuttgart. When it opens on May 13 in Wolfsburg, Germany, it will be Steiner’s first major retrospective ever staged outside the anthroposophical community.
The images that Vitra’s chief curator and deputy director, Mateo Kries, sent me promise a vivid portrait in the round. Watercolours and sculptures, furniture and architectural models, stage sets and Eurythmy robes, lab instruments and maps will flesh out Steiner’s ideas on (among other topics) prenatal existence and child development, environmentalism and economics, medicine and reincarnation. This polymath and mystic also found time to fit the design of necklaces, headache-remedy labels, stained-glass windows and radiator covers into his cosmic Gesamtkunstwerk.
“Today, design and architecture have become very focused on technology, removed from spiritual or social questions,” Kries said. “It is fascinating to examine how Steiner dared to develop this overall vision that included everything from metaphysics and natural science to art.”
I would never have dreamed that “hands-on” could apply to the remote Dr. Steiner of my boyhood. But there he is in a 1919 photograph, dressed in a workman’s smock and grasping a chisel as he contemplates the gigantic wooden statue “Representative of Humanity” that he was carving for the Goetheanum, then under construction. This was actually the first of two Goetheanums: a curvaceous, double-domed, mainly timber structure that burned down in 1922. The second, an angular outcropping of reinforced concrete, broke ground in 1924 and still stands. Vitra has delved into archives and private collections for little-known evidence of the creative processes that shaped them: terse pen-and-ink sketches aquiver with nervous urgency, lumps of plasticine moulded by Steiner’s fingers. These maquettes were guides for the engineers, architects and artisans who assisted him on the dozen meticulously detailed studios, houses and utility buildings he clustered around the Goetheanum.
Evidence that the well-travelled Steiner kept abreast of the avant-garde are apparent in the many variations on Jugendstil, Cubism and Expressionism that appear in his work. Vitra’s pairings of his designs with those by notable contemporaries — a Steiner meditation chair, say, next to a dining chair by Frank Lloyd Wright, another progenitor of “organic architecture,” or an interior photo of Goetheanum II beside a still from the 1920 film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” — offer provocative overlaps and parallels. In most cases, Kries emphasized, no definite line of influence emerges. And like the crystals evoked in his designs, Steiner could reflect others’ brilliance while retaining his idiosyncrasies.
Practically no one outside anthroposophical circles, it seems, lifted specific shapes or motifs from Steiner, but his concepts fascinated creative figures across the aesthetic spectrum. The exhibition will include pages from Wassily Kandinsky’s diary with jottings about Steiner, fan mail from Piet Mondrian, a note from Franz Kafka requesting Steiner’s comments about a new manuscript and a 1923 invitation from the architect Richard Neutra, then a disciple of the Expressionist master Erich Mendelsohn, to visit the new Einstein Tower in Potsdam, Germany. Luminaries in every medium warmed to Steiner’s conviction that the arts could make intangible, universal laws accessible to the senses.
It’s a belief that hasn’t lost its appeal. As Kries and his colleagues began to plan this exhibition, he said, they asked themselves, “Why, over the past decade, have contemporary architecture and design begun to look more and more like the organic shapes and polygons that Steiner developed? Is his idea of metamorphosis of interest now because computers let us simulate natural growing processes? Are people today trying to see objects and furniture almost as living things?”
I can’t imagine a better place to ponder such questions than inside a farbkammer, or “colour chamber,” which Steiner conceived for solitary therapeutic relaxation. Each polyhedral room was to be lined in one solid tone and suffused with soothing light. Century-old working farbkammer prototypes have vanished, but a rare group of sketches and small metal models for a 12-chamber series recently turned up at Dornach’s Rudolf Steiner Archiv. Vitra has constructed a full-size lilac-coloured dodecahedron, about nine feet high, where visitors of every age will be welcome to bask in Dr Steiner’s aura — mind, body and soul.
