The Circle of Life

The Circle of Life

On a personal note, I started at Glenaeon in 1994 with a Class One, in what is now the Class Three room in the Vera Jacobson Building. One of the children who made their way down the stairs from Kindergarten to the Class One room for me to meet them on an auspicious day in December 1993 was a little girl called Dillon Cross. She was a lively, imaginative girl who seemed to have the sun shining out of her on a permanent basis, such was her happy, joyful nature.

For the next seven and a half years it was my happy responsibility to teach Dillon and her many classmates (there were 34 of them in Class Five), to take them on a number of adventurous camps (Upper Allyn, Coolendel, Barrington River), to sing many songs, to do many drawings, and to share many stories, as well as all the rigorous tasks involved in delivering a meaningful and rich curriculum. It was a beautiful journey.

So it was a particularly pleasant moment when Dillon returned to Glenaeon a month ago to undertake her final Practicum before completing her Master of Teaching through the University of New England. While she is now Dillon McKendrick and the mother of two small children, she is as bright and sunny as she ever was.

She took the Geometry Main Lesson with Class Five, and made all the constructions that her own Class Five had done so many years ago, as Geometry is eternal and its laws unchanging. This Class Five main lesson is a remarkable introduction to Geometry, demonstrating that all quadrilaterals can be constructed by layering a series of circles on each other.

It felt like a circle in another way. My own son Robbie is in Class Five, and with Dillon teaching him what I had taught her, it really felt like a circle of life was being completed.

Parent Survey

Please complete the survey which has been sent out to all parents. You may need to check whether the emails from MYP Corporation have gone into a Junk folder. The survey is an important part of our review of the year past, and assists the school in preparing for the year to come. The survey is conducted entirely independently, and can take as little as 5 minutes or as long as you need for a more extended response. All responses are considered and valued as important feedback. The survey will close on Monday September 23rd so please take the time over the weekend and complete the survey.

Fortnightly Newsletter

Next term we will be trialling a fortnightly Glenaeon Newsletter. Weekly Newsletters hark back to a pre-digital era when the hard copy was the only form of regular communication. In these days of multi-channel communication, with email but one form of connecting communities, many schools now publish a fortnightly Newsletter in order to maximize reach and engagement, not to mention managing resources. We will begin this trial in the first fortnight of Term 4 and will be seeking feedback on the impact of this change.

It's a Climate for Change - Glenaeon Students attend Climate March in Sydney

Year 7 students at the march

Over 85 Glenaeon students joined in the Climate March on Friday at 12 midday, some meeting earlier in Bradfield Park, North Sydney and walking across the Harbour Bridge to the Domain. Students from both Primary and High school attended the march, proudly carrying placards and posters. They joined up to 80,000 people in the Domain, where speeches, music and indigenous elders were heard, before marching through the city past NSW Parliament. It was an inspiring afternoon that coincided with marches all over the world.

Centenary Day Celebration and Evening Sioree - 100 years of Steiner Education

Centenary Day Celebration and Evening Sioree - 100 years of Steiner Education

The Centenary Day and Centenary Soiree on Saturday at Castlecrag was a perfectly appropriate celebration for 100 years of Steiner education. The day ran in two sections, from a morning of bread, play, stories and lunch to a cultural evening of music, poetry and stories.

Inspirers and key organisers of the whole event were Joy Day, Mary Heard and Catherine Pilko, who together grew a beautiful vision of a rich but simple celebration of the century that has passed since Dr Rudolf Steiner launched this new impulse in education.
They were the key organisers who were supported by Clare Gordon as Events Coordinator.

Our thanks go to them all and to:

Carly Solomon and Rose McCathie from Preschool
Melony Browell, Sara Tan, Sarah David all volunteered with help
Ebba ran a workshop on storytelling & Sandra made enough bread with the children to feed 120 people
Roger, Prue and class 2 made for some beautiful music to start the day
Lucy Armstrong rana  stall for answering questions about the school
Lyn Clifton, the Steiner Book Centre and Felicity Cutts were there supporting the event
Adrienne Kabos from the Walter Burley Griffin Society ran a walking tour of Griffin sites in Castlecrag– people loved the walk!
Miriam Wells catered for a lovely lunch for everyone
Maintenance team did set up and pack away
Lindsay Sherrott had the grounds looking fresh and trim

In the evening there was a Centenary Soiree, again organised by Joy Day.

Many thanks to:
Christian and Liza Lillicrap for the music
Donna Jacob Sife and Sandra Frain for the stories
Year 12 students Bryn, Sky and Jasper for their performances
Neil Anderson and friends for the poetry
Diane Tatum for Eurythmy
Theodore, Raphaella and Carla for the singing.

The whole day was a harmonious and seamless community event. Many thanks for all for supporting and sharing.

Little Kindy loves to get out and about - and rain is no hindrance! Here they are, walking out in the pouring rain, gumboots, raincoats and all.

Kindergarten Morning Circle

Kindergarten Morning Circle

Morning Circle takes place in the Kindergarten playgrounds after the bell rings, and is a gathering of all children and parents from the 3 Kindergarten classes.

The morning song is sung together, itself an acknowledgement to the indigenous people of our local area, the Cammeraygal tribe.

The words are:

"We greet the Earth, on which we stand,
Hand-in-hand on Cammeraygal Land
We thank the ancestors present and past
Who cared for the earth so it will last
We greet the sun that shines so bright
And shares with us its lovely light
Good morning everyone
Good morning, everyone".

Class One monkey bar fun

Class One monkey bar fun

The monkey bars are a feature in the Castlecrag Class One and Two playground, and are enjoyed by many students during morning recess and lunchtime. In addition, each morning, Class One undertakes an obstacle course, including any combination of climbing along the monkey bars, balancing activities, rope wall climbing, slippery dip, skipping, handstands, crawling, hopping, partner activities and tracing patterns and shapes with their steps.

This happens before the children enter the classroom. It assists in developing the children's motor skills, balance and coordination, which has been shown to facilitate deeper learning, improved concentration, mental processing and learning ability. Certain motor skills and coordination exercises use the same brain pathways as those used for learning and memory. Activities such as these have been shown to help with reading, mathematics, problem solving and logical thinking as well as improve visual perception and processing, which naturally assists all learning in the classroom. What a beneficial and fun way to start every day!

Stay for a short time or until you need to go. Small children are welcome - there are toys and an enclosed play/sandpit area and often a few little friends to make. All welcome, bring your unfinished craft projects, questions and enjoy some crafty company and a cup of tea. Thank you also to parents who are helping the craft teachers wind the many colours of pure wool for the children to use. The colours are simply inspiring!

Choosing their own colours and length, their socks are coming along well - here is an end-of-term photo showing skill, vibrancy and colour of their work. Knitting and craft is known to assist brain development, and the process of following patterns in more complex knitting develops the skills of planning, visualisation and fine motor skills.

Year 7 Food Technology learning about seasonal produce - strawberries

Year 7 have been learning about seasonal produce in Food Technology with teacher Anne Rouse, and this week have been studying strawberries as an example of a fruit that is currently in season. Grown in Australia and transported only from Queensland (not overseas) at this time of year, the current price also reflects their abundance and seasonality. In the two practical applications of this in the curriculum, they have planted strawberries in the school's biodynamic garden, and cooked fresh strawberry jam in the school's food technology kitchen. Complementing the jam, they baked fresh scones, which were all enjoyed together at the end - delicious!

Gardening for Life

Gardening for Life

Gardening teachers Sandra Frain and Kathy Thangathurai organized a biodynamic stir for all three campuses at school, designed to help support and nurture our bushland campuses. The ingredients of this stir were selected to help increase microbial life in the soil and to strengthen the plant life here (grasses, shrubs and trees,) helping to build more resilience to extremes in their environment. It was very appropriate timing, given the important issue that was being advocated around Australia during the climate marches.

They did not organise this activity with the climate rally in mind; rather it was an end of term activity to look after our school environment and to give students another opportunity to be outside and connect with the nature they enjoy every day at school.

Whilst stirring, they discussed what they were doing and why, noting the many ways the environment is regularly cared for here at Glenaeon during daily life.

Students from Classes three to seven and Year 10 Science class applied two biodynamic preparations across our Middle Cove campus. Preschool and Castlecrag campuses also did a similar activity over these days too. -

Hosts needed for Japanese students in November 2019

Hosts needed for Japanese students in November 2019

Dear Glenaeon Parents,
In November, our school will host a group of students aged around 15 from the Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese students will take part in morning English lessons at our school, while afternoons will be an opportunity for excursion and joint classroom lessons with Glenaeon students.
We’d like to offer our visitors a chance to experience Australian hospitality in our homes here in Glenaeon.

This will give them the opportunity to practice their English in a relaxed and friendly environment. Japanese students staying in your family would be included in normal family afternoon and weekend activities, and would travel to school with their host family “sister” or “brother”.
The main expense involved will be to provide meals for the visiting student (including lunch). Families will be paid $50.00 per day per student in advance to cover these costs.  If you are interested in hosting a student for a period of 10 nights between November 10 - 20, 2019, please contact either Mrs Keiko Takahashi, the Japanese teacher or Mr Takashi Ushinohama, the Homestay Coordinator as below.

WHY SWITCH TO LED BULBS?

Here’s just 2 reasons:

They last longer. Without a filament to break or burn out, LED light bulbs can last for over 100,000 hours without showing their age (that's over eleven years at full brightness). This lifespan is twice that of typical fluorescent bulbs and twenty times longer than incandescent light bulbs.

They are energy efficient. An incandescent light bulb loses 80 percent of its energy to heat, leaving only the last 20 percent for light. LED light bulbs turn this around, giving up a scant 20 percent of their energy to heat loss. Not only that, but they operate at 10 to 20 percent of the power required for incandescent bulbs of similar brightness.

FUN FRENCH CLUB AT GLENAEON

When: The class is on a Monday afternoon from 3.45pm to 4.45pm

Lefrench teaching methodology:
Children just love the French Clubs fun approach to language learning which involves lots of games, songs, drama and other lively activities. You will be amazed at how much they learn and how quickly!

Lefrench Club's Methodology is based on informal, fun activities, such as crafts, music and songs, lively games, weekly activity sheets for each child, and progress reports for parents to reinforce at home (via email).

This interactive and communicative approach is supported by professionally designed materials including flashcards, board games and activity sheets.
The Club’s method makes learning fun and stress-free. While children play games, sing songs, act out role plays and interact with each other, they absorb the new language consciously thinking about it. Naturally this all takes place within a carefully structured progressive sequence which enhances learning. Contact : www.lcfclubs@com.au or email support@lflclubs.com.au   Ph: 1300707 288 s

Sydney Youth Orchestra Auditions - an opportunity for your child

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Sydney Youth Orchestras program gives students the experience of playing great music in graded ensembles, as well as giving them the opportunity to meet students from other schools. I would highly recommend considering the organization if your child shows interest in orchestral playing and is keen to branch out! Please see the FLYER HERE

Thanks,
Christian Lillicrap,

Volunteering for Willoughby Council - make a difference

Volunteering for Willoughby Council - make a difference

Would you like to make a real difference to the lives of others?
Would you like to ‘give back’, make friends and learn new skills?
Do you have some spare time during the week?

Willoughby City Council runs a number of services for seniors in our community. These services and programs are all aimed at enabling seniors to live independently, and wouldn’t be possible without the help of our team of wonderful volunteers!

Our services include the following, and run Monday – Friday during working hours:

  • Meals on Wheels

  • Linen Service

  • Social Outings

  • Social Lunches

  • Companion Shopping

We are especially looking for volunteers to assist with our Companion Shopping program and our Linen Service.

Companion shopping pairs a volunteer with an elderly client who needs a bit of extra assistance at the shops. You will regularly collect them from home, drive them to the shops and assist them with their shopping. Although volunteers offer some practical help, this program is also about reducing social isolation and is rewarding for volunteer and client alike!

Volunteers with our Linen Service work in pairs to deliver clean linen to seniors in the local area, and assist with changing bed sheets. As you can imagine, this chore is very tricky for some older people and so your help is greatly appreciated. With your help they can enjoy the feeling of fresh sheets!

If you are interested in volunteering with At Home with Willoughby, please contact Tara Russell, Tara.Russell@willoughby.nsw.gov.au or 02 9777 7831.

Steiner Schools Athletics Carnival

Steiner Schools Athletics Carnival

Photo: Luca Bradfield

On a great spring day 150 keen Middle School Glenaeon students from Yr 7-Yr 10 boarded three buses in their respective house colour red, blue or green to compete in the annual Steiner School’s Athletics carnival on the Central Coast in a great meeting of 100s of other students from Steiner schools in Newcastle, Maitland, Linuel (from Sydney) and the Central Coast itself as the host of this event.

All students had been prepared for this day of friendly competition by practising the respective athletics events at school and competed against the other houses for points and glory and but ultimately for the satisfaction of achieving something for themselves and for demonstrating great sportsmanship and team spirit, particularly in the 4x100m relay races.

As we ran out of time the much loved “Teacher’s 100m” race for glory could not happen as the day was too busy with many students competing in 8 different disciplines around a great athletics oval.

Each year some of the NSW Steiner schools meet twice, in autumn in Sydney in the pool and in spring on an athletics track in the Central Coast to celebrate colourful games, movement and fun by joining together and recognising each other in competing and achieving together. It is always a pleasure to catch up with other colleagues, work with them so the students in our care can have a meaningful and uplifting experience and grow stronger and more purposeful into their physical bodies!

The blue house/colour team won both events as it somehow has the most dedicated competitors among them who give their all to achieve great results in the water and on the tracks. Runner up was again the red team and green was beaten only by a very small margin!

Let’s do it all again in 2020 and may the red and green colour teams challenge for a win!

Many thanks to Luca Bradfield for these photographs

On a rather rainy and overcast day 48 Glenaeon athletic competitors, who were carefully selected as the best in their respective gender and age group, set off to compete in  the ISD Athletics Carnival at ES Marks Athletics Fields adjacent to Centennial Park for some wet but great competitions in 10 events: 100m, 200, 400, 800, 1500m, shot put, javelin, discus, high jump, long jump and 4x100m relay  racing.

Many great results were achieved, and many were just a bit unlucky to end up 4th in their events  (in fact 18 4th spots were gained!).

11 students came third in their events, 15 came even second an 1 whopping 11 events were won across all age groups and offered events. Some fantastic competitors even won in two different categories (Scarlet McQueen in Yr 9and Jake Fisher, Yr 7).
8 students qualified for the next level of our ISD Association, the AICES Athletics Championships. Congratulations to all competitors, and the place getters in particular.
The champions 2019 who achieved 1st places in their chosen events were:
Cameron Henwood (Yr 10)
Scarlet McQueen (Yr 9)
Wesley Arconati (Yr 9)
Ivan Moore (Yr 8)
Maadi Prasad (Yr 8)
Elke Mueller (Yr 8)
Sophia Thompson (Yr 8)
Jake Fisher (Yr 7)
