Running a school with multiple campuses has many challenges. Waste management is an ongoing one.

Mary Heard has led the charge on reducing waste at Castlecrag and has set a brilliant example for us all.

The Family Fair on 2nd November presents some unique challenges when it comes to waste management. This year, we aim to continue the efforts of Patrick Franklyn and his 2018 team to Reduce, Reuse & Compost.

Please help us manage the sorting of rubbish for least impact and maximum diversion from landfill.

AT THE FAIR WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO DIVERT WASTE: HERE’S HOW -

• Bring a bag for shopping.

• We’ll be using RUZI recyclable cups again this year. Please place these in the receptacles provided.

• Look for our Care Gnome at the Fair: Think twice before placing anything in the general rubbish: you will see CARE STATIONS for soft plastics as well as compost buckets around campus. Please place compostable food scraps, plates and cutlery in these.

Our heroic gardening teachers Sandra Frain and Kathy Thangathurai plan to build a huge compost mound to turn our Fair waste into life-giving soil amoebas. The Fair Lives on!

HARRIET SCHWARZROCK
Harriet Schwarzrock graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 1999 with Honours in Visual Arts, majoring in glass, after transferring from a science degree.

Prior to graduating, Schwarzrock travelled through North America visiting renowned workshops and studios, assisting artists including Laura Donefer and Steven Rolfe Powell. On her return to Australia, Schwarzrock began assisting at Denizen Studio, Sydney, working with many of Australia’s best glassblowers, developing her skill and technique and finding inspiration and influence for her own work. 

Schwarzrock’s practice is currently based in her backyard, where she and her partner and glass artist, Matthew Curtis  (www.curtisglassart.com/curtis)run a hot glass studio together, tinting custom coloured glass. See: www.curtisglassart.com

​Schwarzrock has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and abroad. "In my artistic practice, I endeavor to explore balance and interconnectivity. I am repeatedly drawn to those tenuous and often fleeting moments where an individual object and the asymmetrical fit together sympathetically.  I work predominantly with blown glass components and metal fixtures. I position multiples of similar biologically inspired forms into compositions. The components appear to be unfurling, evolving, floating and shifting in their assemblage. Whilst aligning these forms, I seek to capture a quiet sense of poise, rhythm and balance. I aim to be attentive to the poetry of the spaces created between forms."

Big Kindy have been working on their Silent Auction Piece - here they are starting work on the piece of felting, which will be available for bidding in the Silent Auction room in the hall kitchen at the Fair. They put the finishing touches on recently and it is very beautiful.

Despite the hot afternoon, many families turned out to hear Gardening teacher Sandra Frain talk about the bees in our own gardens! Here they are enjoying a circle in the shade as Sandra explained the wonder of the bees.

Class 5 studies Ancient Greece, and as part of this they explore the origins of the early Olympic Games. It is tradition that Class 5 from neighbouring Steiner Schools come together for a Greek Olympics, hosted by Glenaeon this year at Rotary Athletics field in Chatswood West. This year celebrated the 21st year it has taken place, itself a significant milestone. Lorien Novalis and Kamaroi travelled to meet us, and the students were divided into the 5 different states of Ancient Greece in mixed-school teams - Corinth, Sparta, Athens, Thebes and Megara. After an Opening Ceremony and athlete parade, the Games were officially opened by the high priest of Zeus! Wearing state-coloured tunics, the students took to discus, javelin, sprint, long jump and traditional Greek wrestling, as well as 400m and relay events. The students cheered each other on all day and there were precious wooden medals awarded for individual places at the closing ceremony. The overall winner of the State team was Corinth! Congratulations to all students, and thank you to Kamaroi and Lorien Novalis' teachers and many parent helpers who made the day a thoroughly enjoyable event.

Class 3 performed their play "By the Waters of Babylon" to students, staff and parents last week. It was glowing accolades from everyone who was able to see it, and Class teacher Katherine Arconati said that "it was such a privilege to share the experience with the children". Playing live music with cellos, violins, recorder, xylophones and percussion, they told the story of 3 successive ancient Hebrew Kingdoms searching for the Truth, centred around the stories of Daniel, his 3 wise friends, their love of their God and survivals in the burning fire and lions den. The play was alive with lions, priests, counsellors, soldiers, servants, fire dancers, town folk, the mighty statue of Baal and many more.

Good luck and well done to the Class of 2019 who will finish HSC Exams on November 11. All the best for this exam period, and beyond. We look forward to seeing you again at your Graduation Assembly and Year 12 Formal.

Both the School Canteen (Wed/Thur/Fri) and Humming Cafe (Mon/Tue) are available. The school canteen operates at the Middle Cove campus for Years 3-12. You can  see the menu below and also find the menus on the School Stream app. Click below for the menu and the new information on how to order now from Humming Cafe. For Humming Cafe orders, students can just write their order, name and class on the brown bag and give it to Reception before 9am. The menu is printed up on the reception noticeboard.

We welcome and thank Lara Taylor from year 10 who is our new 2nd Hand Uniform Shop co-ordinator. A warm thank you to Tom Williams from Year 12 for managing the shop so well in his final year. We look forward to seeing parents again this term. The uniform shop will be open from 3.00 - 3.45 every second Thursday starting on October 31, 2019.

WAYS TO SAVE WATER

Brush your teeth with the tap off.

Leaving the tap running when brushing your teeth wastes up to 10L per minute.

Regular attendance at school is essential for children to achieve their educational best, increasing career and life options. I would like to remind you that the Education Act (1990) requires parents to ensure that children of compulsory school age attend school each day it is open for instruction. Class rolls are marked every morning and parents are required to sign their child/children in at the school office if they are late and out if they are leaving early. Thank you for your ongoing support with this issue.

The world is run by those who turn up.

Attending school every day = 100% attendance

Attending school 4 ½ days a week = 90% attendance = 4 weeks missed per year

Attending 4 days a week = 80% attendance = more than half a term missed per year.

Attending school 3 ½ days each week = 70% attendance = more than a quarter of the school missed per year.

An average attendance of 80% or less across a child’s school career adds up to missing a whole 2 years from school.

Being late for school reduces learning time.

If your child is 5 minutes late every day they will miss three days of learning each year.

If your child is 15 minutes late every day they will miss 2 weeks of learning each year.

Make every minute count.

Dear Parents,

As It’s the last term of the year and we will be finalising our final direct debits on the 26^th November it’s time to start submitting your term 4 CIPs now (if you haven’t already done so). Read below for information on how to submit. You can start submitting any time from now until Wednesday 20^th November. No submissions will be accepted after this cut-off date.

Each family is billed $140 per term for the Community Involvement Program. When voluntary work is done and registered, it can be credited back to your account at the rate of $17.50 per hour (in other words 8 hours per term will entitle you to the full $140 credit).

It is now time to start claiming your CIP credits for Term 4.  As there are many families at Glenaeon it takes some time to process the credits for everybody so we ask that you submit your Term 4 CIP hours by Wednesday 20^th November in order to have them credited back to you.

The CIP form is available online so it’s very simple to do! Click on this link to take you directly:

You can complete the form on-line and hit ‘submit’. Or if you prefer there is also a link to a paper form (pdf) at the bottom of the page which you can simply print, fill out manually and hand in at reception. The paper forms are also available in the CIP folder held at reception.

Note, you must submit your CIP hours worked regardless of which committee/event/role you participate in or hold. Note that credits are not carried over from one year to the next. Thank you.

The Sacred Kingfisher usually arrives in the Sydney region in late spring or early summer from PNG or northern Australia. They breed throughout the summer months and feed off insects in the forests. The parents usually burrow through termite mounds or use tree hollows for nest building.

This week's Blackboard beauty was drawn by Class 5 teacher Cathy Bower for the Ancient Greece Main Lesson. The students have immersed themselves in Ancient Greek culture, songs and history, culminating this week in recreating the early Olympic Games at a combined athletics event with Kamaroi and Lorien Novalis Steiner Schools.

On a very warm Tuesday (29/10), 16 keen netballer from Glenaeon took to the courts at Moore Park Netball Courts in Centennial Park to compete in a junior and senior draw against eight other schools from around the city. Students from Yr 7 to Yr 11 formed the teams and had never played together before but gelled quickly to form formidable sides in six games they played.

Both juniors and seniors came second in their respective pools winning their games comprehensively and also at times tightly and by that qualified for finals. In the finals both teams faced the strong girls from Reddam House who they had both lost to in the group matches.

Again, in the final the Glenaeon girls could not overcome the power from the Bondi based school and lost their finals. However, all players came away with a feeling of achievement and were thoroughly exhausted as they played with no subs and in hot conditions.

It was beautiful to observe how in such a short time students bonded over a common cause – to play together and be just that little bit better than the opponent! The elation of getting to the finals was equally important as it was to deal with the defeat and the emotions that come with a loss. Sport has unique capacities that expose students to these feelings and where they can genuinely support each other and celebrate their achievements openly and with great joy!

The girls carried themselves wonderfully and were fantastic ambassadors for our school!

We will try to win next year again!

The recent GPA meeting was informative and a great round up before the Fair. Thank you to all of our Fair organisers this year from Class Four - your efforts have been wonderful and we are looking forward to a wonderful day!

The next GPA meeting will be held next Wednesday November 27 at 7:30pm in the Marion Mahony Griffin Hall. We welcome all parents to join us and nibbles and tea are provided. Come along and listen or contribute towards updates and issues arising from the lass Parents, greater parent body and school. Our meetings are relaxed, focused and generally keep to time. It is a great way to hear more about other years at the school and updates from Head of School Andrew Hill and the School Council, and contribute if you would like to. 

We are also inviting parents to contribute ideas and think of any items/projects that you might like to GPA to consider investigating and funding. Please send these ideas to gpa@glenaeon.nsw.edu.au, come to the meeting or let you Class Parent know before the next meeting. We would like to have a 'wish list' that we can consider and start our planning for next year's projects. Thank you.

African Drumming Group - Open to Glenaeon Primary Children

When: Mondays 3.45 - 4.30pm during Term 4, starting 21 Oct – finishing 2 December 2019
Where: Willoughby Park, under trees adjacent to sports ground near bowling club. Approval given by Willoughby Council
What: African drumming and different rhythms, teaching about African instruments and culture, interactive storytelling using the drums, body percussion, rhythm games, singing African songs and movement . A minimum of 16 children is needed  and parents welcome to join in too!

The Number 3

In Rudolf Steiner education and philosophy the number 3 has a prominent place. The Early Childhood Intensive was a real experience of three-folding as the timetable was designed to demonstrate breathing and rhythm, which are integral to a program for little ones. We began with a lecture in the morning, followed by a workshop and concluded with artistic activities.

Our Intensives for our Distance students are essential for making real connections with the Steiner community and save our courses from being dry theory all through a computer. In Early Childhood, the modelling that teachers do for the children can only be truly understood with a ‘real life’ model as an exemplum. So, students come away from our Intensives enriched and nurtured with the human contact through our wise, passionate and experienced tutors.

Highlights of the week of many and varied sessions included nutrition and biodynamics, a study of biographical rhythms, celebrating festivals, craft and much more.

A lovely German family is looking for an au pair for 6-12 months starting February 2020. They live in Cologne Germany a vibrant, beautiful city with plenty of things to do. They have one 3 year old boy and are about to give birth to twin girls. The job will be mainly looking after their son.

JOB

• Au pair to 3 year old boy but also supporting the mother with her twin girls

• The job consists of looking after the child, bringing him/picking him up from kindergarten as well as taking him to afternoon clubs (music and sport). It also entails getting him ready in the morning (getting him dressed, brushing teeth etc) and eating breakfast with him

• Cooking basic recipes and basic house work (e.g. cleaning the kitchen) is also required as well as doing some shopping

Our much loved teachers Christian and Liza Lillicrap suffered one of the most ultimate of losses last week, and our community is the lesser for it. As we grieve with them, we remember Theodore in all his joyous and mischievous energy, but also his profound depths of thought and feeling.
