Hosts needed for Japanese students in November 2019
Hosts needed for Japanese students in November 2019

Dear Glenaeon Parents,
In November, our school will host a group of students aged around 15 from the Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese students will take part in morning English lessons at our school, while afternoons will be an opportunity for excursion and joint classroom lessons with Glenaeon students.
We’d like to offer our visitors a chance to experience Australian hospitality in our homes here in Glenaeon. This will give them the opportunity to practice their English in a relaxed and friendly environment. Japanese students staying in your family would be included in normal family afternoon and weekend activities, and would travel to school with their host family “sister” or “brother”.
The main expense involved will be to provide meals for the visiting student (including lunch). Families will be paid $50.00 per day per student in advance to cover these costs. If you are interested in hosting a student for a period of 10 nights between the 10th out 20th November 2019, please contact either Mrs Keiko Takahashi, the Japanese teacher or Mr Takashi Ushinohama, the Homestay Coordinator as below.

Traffic Management Plan
Traffic Management Plan

Parking rules - ordinary school days
Glenaeon is located in a residential neighbourhood with very narrow streets. Because of this restriction, the School asks that parents and guardians park and or drop-off their children in specific areas to keep the traffic flowing, children safe and our neighbours happy!
1. No one is to park or drop-off in Greenfield or Victoria Avenues, not even to kiss-and-ride
2.Parents of Class 3 and 4 students may drop off and collect in Glenroy Avenue, but must ensure they park legally and do not impede driveways.
3. No one is to park or stop in the No Stopping areas at any time.
4. No one is to turn into the school driveway, or any other driveway, to drop off or to attempt a three point turn. Please turn in the cul-de-sac. Continued below
5. Parents Years 5-6 are not to drop off or collect students in Glenroy or Greenfield Avenues.
6. Parents Years 5-6 are requested to drop off students elsewhere such as Tyneside Ave or Megalong Ave - see map for details.
7. Students can walk from Tyneside Ave to the lights at Eastern Valley Way via the public footpath through Telak Close or via Megalong Ave.
8. The traffic lights at Eastern Valley Way will be supervised every morning from 7:45am to 9:30am and every afternoon from 3:00pm to 4:30pm.
9. Do not park in Greenfield Ave or Victoria Ave, either in or opposite the bus stop or elsewhere. Although there are some legal parking spaces here, this is a dangerous area for pedestrians due to bus and car traffic. Other sections of Greenfield Ave and Victoria Ave are too narrow to park legally.
10. Senior students may not park in Glenroy Ave or Greenfield Ave or on the school site and should park in Tyneside Ave or similar.
11. There is no vehicular access to or from the school site between 8:30am to 9:00amand 3:15pmto 3:45pm. See driveway rules for further information.
12. Parents dropping students to before school sport are asked to drop students off site and for them to walk on to campus.

Class 1 learning to knit
Class 1 learning to knit

Having last week experienced the journey of wool, washing sheep and alpaca fleece, carding it (combing) and spinning it using a drop spindle, the children then fashioned their very own knitting needles. This week, Class 1 children were officially introduced to knitting. They are knitting a simple pot holder, and have already become a very enthusiastic group of knitters.

It's Play Time! Class 6 composing and writing the score

Class 6 are busy composing and writing their own music for their upcoming play 'Alice in Wonderland'. In groups, they practice and record the score, creating the whimsical and fun music that will accompany the script and drama. Other groups are working on creative costume design and clever props to create the crazy world 'down the rabbit hole'. Learning to write music begins in Class 3 at Glenaeon, so by Class 6 they have a sound ability to compose and write their own music pieces for their own instruments to play together. Class teacher Rodney Dean encourages great creativity within his class, and their play is sure to be another accomplished performance. It was 'Earth Day' (and a MUFTI day) without power at Glenaeon on this day, raising money for climate research.

Language students win awards for Japanese and German
Language students win awards for Japanese and German

The Language Department has some wonderful news to share with you. As from Year 8, all language students have the opportunity to practise their Japanese, French, German or other other language they study on a program, which is called Education Perfect. There are vocabulary practices, listening, speaking and reading practices, which all help to improve language skills. This organisation puts on state and world-wide competitions each year. Last month there was a state competition and all students in NSW who study a language were able to participate.
These Championships last for 10 days. The aim is to try and get as many correct answers as you can and the students competed with over 20,000 students from all over the NSW. I am very happy to announce that the Glenaeon language students worked very hard and achieved a terrific ranking in this championship. Glenaeon came first among schools that had 51-100 students participate in this event - a really wonderful achievement and an amazing team effort! All the German students as a group came 5th in the state out of 148 schools and all the Japanese students came 7th in the state out of 192 schools. We would like to recognise a few students who went particularly well and gained special awards. Students who obtained at least 500 correct answers achieved a Credit Award. Students who obtained 1000 and more correct answers receive a Bronze Award. For a Gold Award they needed to answer more than 3000 questions correctly and for an Elite Award students needed to answer more than 10,000 questions correctly.
Credit Awards: Mikayla Srgal, Oscar Street, Anouch Swanepoel, Minyu Vandeberg, Ryan Agnew, Alex Smyth, Nikolas Peter.
Bronze Awards: Jolan Leforestier, Luca Ximenes, Michaela Thompson, Ashleigh Taylor, Julia Johnston
Gold Award: Isabella Coates
Elite Awards: Si-Yun Tan and Maadi Prasad
A Gold Award in Japanese was achieved by Isabella Coates in Year 9.
An Elite Award in German was achieved by Si Yun Tan in Year 9 and she came 13th in the state.
An Elite Award in Japanese was achieved by Maadi Prasad in Year 8 – he came 12th in the state.
Congratulations to all students who participated and especially to those students who received awards.
Looking ahead: The World Championship starts next Tuesday, on the 27th August and we would like to encourage all students to take part in this Championship. You don’t need a laptop to participate, you just can use your phone and you can do it on the bus or train to and from school or in the car. But, please don’t do it while walking!! Happy learning!!

ISD Soccer Carnival 2019
ISD Soccer Carnival 2019
On Wednesday 7th August two excited teams made their way to Queen Park to participate in the annual ISD Soccer Carnival. As this was a 'senior students only' event and Glenaeon did not have enough senior students, we had younger students ‘play up’ in a senior team. This gave them an opportunity to shine and to prove themselves amongst the senior students.
It was a great sunny day and both teams won, lost and drew games. The boys didn’t make the finals, although they came away with two wins, a draw and a loss. The girls’ team lost and drew one game each, but won three of their encounters.
They played in the semi-finals but couldn’t win that last game, so came third overall. This is a great success for a team that came together in this way with some senior students unable to attend due to exams and other commitments.
Lane Bromley was our main goal scorer with hattricks in two games scoring three goals in each game!
It is a great opportunity for outdoor learning, team building, communicating and for sharing in the elation of a win, whilst also coming to terms with a tight loss.
It is a great opportunity also for growth, particularly for those younger players who joined the teams. They were: Luca X., Hana P., Petal G., Bibi C., Sophia Th. And Eva P. all in Yr 8.

Canteen Volunteers needed ASAP please! A message from Sharon :

Hello and welcome to another term of delicious morning teas and lunches from the Middle Cove canteen!
With the second half of the year well underway, we are asking mums, dads, aunts and uncles, grandmas and grandpas, carers and friends to consider volunteering in the canteen. We need one volunteer for each day that we operate. Please come and help! Thank you to those who have recently signed up!
Lorna and I operate the canteen on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and volunteers work between 9am-1pm. Some people sign up once a year and some love to come once a term as they enjoy the experience so much!
I will make you a real coffee and you and your child will receive free food for the day. The kitchen has a wonderful vibe, with the Canteen surrounded by bush and our very friendly kookaburras. Your children also enjoy seeing you working in the canteen!
If you can help, please put your name down on the roster - https://signup.zone/glenaeon-

What to do if your child is absent from school
What to do if your child is absent from school

DID YOU KNOW?
If a student misses as little as 8 days every school term, by the end of Primary school they will have missed over a year of education.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Notify the school by 9.30am on the day your child is sick or absent (phone, email, Schoolstream)
2) Provide a medical certificate for 2 or more consecutive days off sick (hand delivered or emailed)
3) Apply to The Principal in advance of any leave that is required for 2 or more days
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and achieve the career and life options. Schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other people.
Simple Sustainability - Glenaeon is committed to reducing waste
Simple Sustainability - Glenaeon is committed to reducing waste

PLASTIC, PLASTIC EVERYWHERE!
Plastic as we know is not good for the planet and yet it is very hard to avoid, often lurking in places we would least suspect. For instance standard tea bags – the dunking kind, as opposed to loose-leaf tea – aren’t one hundred percent biodegradable. Most of the ingredients are paper fibre (around 80% as an average), however to keep the tea leaves inside of the ‘bag’ (no one likes a leaf burst mid-stir), many brands heat-seal the contents. This means that a thin layer of polypropylene, essentially ‘sealing plastic’, is used to fasten the bags together to stop the leaves from falling out. Many tea bags also contain acrylic copolymer emulsion, which is a plastic-based glue.

Thank you to the teachers and staff who took the time to talk to interested families visiting the North Shore School Expo, held at Chatswood Concourse last weekend. NUT & PEANUT ALLERGY (ANAPHYLAXIS)
NUT & PEANUT ALLERGY (ANAPHYLAXIS)

At Glenaeon we have a number of students with a
LIFE THREATENING NUT / PEANUT ALLERGY.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Even a small trace of nut, peanut or nut/peanut product may trigger a severe allergic reaction called Anaphylaxis, which attacks the immune system leading potentially to death within minutes.
This reaction can happen by taste, touch and sometimes can be airborne. All of these students have access to an adrenaline injection in the form of an Epipen, which can save lives. Photo posters are displayed in the staffroom and First Aid room for easy identification of these children.
Glenaeon works with parents/carers to support students in developing an awareness of their allergies and what foods to avoid. Students are encouraged not to share food and to always check with a parent/adult/teacher if unsure at any time.
HOW CAN YOU HELP TO KEEP GLENAEON STUDENTS SAFE?
Please help us by not including peanut or any nut products in your child’s lunchbox. This includes peanut butter and Nutella.
Please avoid products with any nuts/peanuts listed as an ingredient.
Explain about nut/peanut allergy to your child and encourage the ‘no food sharing’ rule.
Please consider what you are sending for birthday treats to share with the class, checking there are no nut products included.
The school canteen does not serve products containing nuts.
It is only with the continued support of all parents and staff that we can effectively maintain a safe school environment for these children.
Thank you for your understanding. We know you will want to support the school and these children.
Do you have a washing machine to donate or give to school?
Do you have a washing machine to donate or give to school?

We have various departments that need to use a washing machine on a weekly basis and would like to ask that if anyone has a working machine that they wish to donate or give away to please contact Reception at Middle Cove. We have a need for one more machine. Thank you kindly.
MEDICAL UPDATES AND ACTION PLANS
MEDICAL UPDATES AND ACTION PLANS

MEDICAL UPDATES AND ACTION PLANS
A reminder that all students who have a new or existing health condition must provide updated documentation to the school. This is extremely important for students with anaphylaxis - the school requires an ASCIA Action Plan every school year, signed and dated by a medical professional with an updated photograph.
EpiPens and other medication also need to be replaced/expiry date checked at this time.
Medical Updates and Action Plans
1) ASCIA for Anaphylaxis
2) Asthma Action Plan
3) Other life threatening medical plans
Parents/carers of students with medical conditions already identified need to ensure all information is updated, and any forms returned to Reception. Any questions or changes to Plans, please contact Lisa Wood on 9932 2304

Grassroots Eco Store – Benefits of Alpaca Beanies for Young Children
Grassroots Eco Store – Benefits of Alpaca Beanies for Young Children

These hand knitted beanies are made from alpaca wool, known for its soft, fine fibres that protect during varying temperatures throughout the seasons. Lyn Clifton from Raphael's Rooms at Glenaeon, has advised that they support the developing head forces, offering protection and calm to the nerve sense system. As children’s growth forces move to the head and nerve sense system between 7-9 years they can become overly sensitive to noise and visual stimulation. Children benefit from having their head protected by a light cap due to their sensory openness a it can be very supportive especially for the very young child and the Class 1-3 child. This particular design helps to keep the ears warm in the windy weather we're experiencing as well as helping to ease earaches, head and tooth pains. Alpaca fibre has the innate ability to regulate warmth depending on temperatures sothey are suitable to be worn all day inside and out. Children wearing them will have the added benefit of warmer feet and clearer thinking.
Warm regards, Felicity

FUN FRENCH CLUB AT GLENAEON
When: The class is on a Monday afternoon from 3.45pm to 4.45pm
Lefrench teaching methodology:
Children just love the French Clubs fun approach to language learning which involves lots of games, songs, drama and other lively activities. You will be amazed at how much they learn and how quickly!
Lefrench Club's Methodology is based on informal, fun activities, such as crafts, music and songs, lively games, weekly activity sheets for each child, and progress reports for parents to reinforce at home (via email).
This interactive and communicative approach is supported by professionally designed materials including flashcards, board games and activity sheets.
The Club’s method makes learning fun and stress-free. While children play games, sing songs, act out role plays and interact with each other, they absorb the new language without consciously thinking about it. Naturally this all takes place within a carefully structured progressive sequence which enhances learning

Year 9 students canoe with 'The Cove' program.

Glenaeon offers a program to the Year 9 students called 'The Cove', which aims to build resilience, learn to make better decisions and for students to take action in their own lives. In turn, this can influence the choices they make to create more positive outcomes for themselves and their learning. One aspect of 'The Cove' is to engage students in more learning in and from nature in order to hone what nature can offer to the human being and, more specifically, as a learning environment for the adolescent student.
The Year 9 group experienced their first local canoeing adventure exploring the harbour and Scott’s Creek near school. In Term 3 the students will have the opportunity to explore the immediate surroundings from a water’s perspective while being active in canoes on the water. They learn about nature, the sport and how to take care of our environment by more closely connecting to the place that surrounds their school. Land care, understanding of the mangroves and the nature on the water’s edge, as well as water safety and camaraderie in the canoes are all aspects the students learn about and develop in themselves.
Last Monday, students in Year 9 walked 3 km to pick up their canoes which had been transported there by Outdoor Education teachers Scott Williams and Kristen Gardiner, before launching them and learning paddling techniques to navigate the canoe more efficiently and effectively. They explored the area as Scott spoke about to the students about the different tree and plant species that could be observed around the water’s edge. Students then paddled towards Scotts Creek to look at the mangroves before heading down the creek to arrive at school. There, students disembarked their canoes carefully and carried them to a storage place just underneath the school property to be used next time.margaretm

Sydney Youth Orchestra Auditions - an opportunity for your child
Sydney Youth Orchestra Auditions - an opportunity for your child

Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Sydney Youth Orchestras program gives students the experience of playing great music in graded ensembles, as well as giving them the opportunity to meet students from other schools. I would highly recommend considering the organization if your child shows interest in orchestral playing and is keen to branch out! Please see the FLYER HERE
Thanks,

Meaningful Learning: Main Lessons
Meaningful Learning: Main Lessons

Main Lessons are one of the most distinctive aspects of schools working out of the impulse of Dr Rudolf Steiner. Our Main Lesson practice is both a method and a content:
Main Lesson Method: Deep Learning
We learn best when we are engaged, when we have time to be immersed in a subject, when our feelings are stimulated, when we can be active in our learning. Dr Steiner’s suggestion was quite simple: all these characteristics of healthy and effective learning can be met if lessons are organised in blocks of teaching over an intense period. So we organise key teaching and learning into significant blocks of time that are spread over a three week period. This extended period enables students to go deeply into a topic, to be immersed in it, to make connections between disciplines. Above all, it enables students (and teachers!) to be deeply and inwardly engaged with a topic in a way that is not possible in the relatively short time of a single period.
Such short periods are ideal for rhythmical learning, where subjects need regular repetition to build a specific set of skills (eg basic skills in English and Maths, Languages, the creative arts, Sport).
In the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Humanities (History/Geography) the secret of the main lesson success is the daily work. Taking in new material one day and sleeping on it, allows our deep unconscious to embed learning more deeply in our mind. Picking up the learning the next morning ensures a freshness and vitality in how a student embraces the content of the main lesson. Over the three weeks, this daily process builds what has become the “holy grail” of contemporary educators: deep learning.
In the younger years, these block lessons are literally the main academic lesson of the day, hence the name which we now use to describe this period of learning through the school. It also happens at a time when we are most awake and ready for learning ie the first periods of the morning.
Main Lesson Content: A Curriculum of World Citizenship
The curriculum of Main Lessons through the school is a broad experience of the unfolding story of humanity, our human story. This journey equips our students with a picture of the human being in history, the sciences, art and literature. Each main lesson is a “Big Picture”, a big idea that opens a window into one broad realm of human experience. Our aim as teachers is for each main lesson to leave behind in the soul of the student an image that can literally last for life. Former students often speak of the lasting legacy that main lessons leave, as they look back on their journey at Glenaeon.
The Main Lesson topics currently underway at this stage of Term 3 provide a snapshot of the rich journey our students undertake:
Class 1: Nature Stories: Environmental Science including Class Play (Drama)
Class 2: English: King of Ireland’s Son: Celtic Narrative
Class 3: In the Promised Land: Hebrew stories
Class 4: Fractions and Ratios
Class 5: Ancient Greece
Class 6: Geometry
Year 7: Creative Writing / Polynesian Cultures
Year 8: Platonic Solids (Mathematics) x 2
Year 9: Organic Chemistry / Conic Sections (Mathematics)
Year 10: Surveying: Applied Trigonometry / Physiology
Year 11 and 12 are currently off on exam preparation.
Mia Westcott is a GlenX, a former student (K-12), now training to be a Pediatrician at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. This is what she wrote in looking back at her journey through Glenaeon:
"I have always found Main Lesson to be such a huge part of my life at Glenaeon, a fascinating and enjoyable experience. The things I have learnt in Main Lessons seem to recur throughout life, and make daily life a richer experience. I have found evidence of this when travelling, such as when I knew as much about Norse Mythology as the tour guide when in Norway, felt like I was with old friends when looking at the wonderful paintings and architecture of the Renaissance in Italy, and actually knew what the guide was talking about in India, as I had studied both the Ramayana and Bhavagad Gita. My parents have made me realise just how lucky I am to have learnt about all these things, and I would have thought it perfectly normal, but for the fact that they often didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. Main Lessons were also an excuse to draw and be creative, and when I look back at my main lesson books, I remember the great pleasure I received from this. I have to admit, I still have every single Main Lesson book from primary school and most from high school, and (don’t tell anyone), I actually enjoy getting them out and looking through them, remembering the fantastic stories."
Meaningful Learning indeed!
