Small Yet Meaningful Acts of Kindness
“Love starts when we push aside our ego and make room for someone else.”
– Rudolf Steiner
There is something truly special about hearing the stories of our students. These stories often reflect strength and courage in moments of challenge, remarkable achievements in the heat of competition, or a growing sense of agency in response to societal issues. Over recent weeks, I’ve been fortunate to witness and hear about many such moments - each one a powerful reminder of the immense privilege I have in working with young people and their families every day.
Today, I’d like to share a different kind of story - one that is simple in gesture but profound in its impact. Last week, I received an email from a member of the public acknowledging a small yet meaningful act of kindness by a Glenaeon student:
“Running for the bus this morning, I knew I wasn’t going to make it... that was until a [Glenaeon] schoolgirl waiting at the stop saw my mad scramble. She got up, went to the bus door, and signalled the driver to wait. He reopened the doors - and I made my bus. It was a small act of kindness, but one I truly appreciated. She absolutely made my morning!”
In that one thoughtful gesture, this unidentified Glenaeon student exemplified many of the qualities we aim to nurture in our young people: quiet confidence, empathy, and the courage to act for the benefit of others.
To this student, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. And to her family — thank you for clearly modelling and nurturing such values at home. Through intentional kindness and thoughtful action, your daughter is already on a strong path toward becoming a young person of good character, well placed to impart meaning and direction to her own life.
Warmly,
Diana Drummond
