Transcript of Ruby and Katiya's speech delivered at our last High School Assembly:
"Hi everyone, I'm Ruby and this is Katiya and we are the social justice captains. I’ve (Ruby) been at this school since Year 8 and have always held an interest in implementing social justice programs within our school. I (Katiya) have been at the school since Class 1 and have found it welcoming how involved everyone is within the schools community. We just wanted to come up today to share our experience in the Larapinta Trail and what we learned from it.
On our trip we learned the importance of connection to land and the importance Australia has as a whole in building a strong connection to the indigenous people of our country. Which is why, we as social justice captains wish to strengthen our ties with the indigenous customs, traditions, practices and people within our community. The trail exposed us to the outback landscapes and its diverse beauty, through following the trail we uncovered many Indigenous stories and beliefs such as the story of the constellation of the seven sisters. We woke up at 3 am and climbed Mt. Sonder, and were able to get a personal experience of the night sky without the city's light pollution. The mountain walk allowed us to reflect and learn from the previous days we had completed. Which is why we think our school outdoor programs are such an important part of our schools curriculum as they allow us to experience and reflect upon not only ourselves but also the land around us.
So after the program Ruby and I had a conversation about how we could implement the same learning we experienced on the program to features at our school, including through artworks, learning experiences and talks. So our school can be more connected with the wisdom and knowledge of the first nations people. Specifically we wanted to focus our efforts on strengthening ties with and learning from the first nation Australians."
