Parent Education - 'Motor Development and its Influence on Literacy and Numeracy' - talk by educator Jane Swain

An evening talk with Jane Swain
on Thursday 8
th August 2019 at 7:30pm at Kamaroi Rudolf Steiner School

“The circuits of the brain that are used for mental action are the same ones that are used for physical action. . . . The movement of the body as a child matures is essential for the optimal development of memory, language, and learning.”

Harvard neuropsychologist, Dr. John Ratey, 2002.

Decades of brain research have validated the causative influence of motor development on cognitive development. In her work with children of all ages over many years, Jane has explored this topic as it relates to numeracy and literacy. She will bring concrete examples from her work, so that parents and teachers can go home equipped with new insights to support their children’s healthy development. Please view THE FLYER HERE.

Know Your Child

A morning lecture with Jane Swain on Friday 9th August 2019 at 9:15am

Have you ever noticed how one child thrives in a loud and bustling environment while another responds to the same situation by squeezing behind the sofa and covering up with a blanket?

Sensory experiences are very individual, and they change over time. We tend to expect that everyone else experiences sensation as we do, but this is not the case! Come learn the secret language of interesting, unusual and even perplexing behaviour and how behaviour may be your children's ways of meeting sensory needs. You will get to know your own children more fully as the unique individuals they are and ways to help them cope in a variety of sensory situations. Please view THE FLYER HERE.

Sun, solar and safety at Middle Cove

Sun, solar and safety at Middle Cove

School holidays are always a busy time for Glenaeon’s Maintenance team who work hard to make our school better for students and the whole community. Our students will enjoy new water bubblers, deck lighting near our Cafe, and a new fence and gate near the Vera Jacobson building for increased student safety, all as a result of their work.

In addition we are happy to report that we now have solar panels installed on both the Sylvia Brose Hall and our Art/DT Buildings at our Middle Cove campus! A total of 99.6 kW of solar collectors (330+ panels) were installed by the solar company Energus. Thanks to the generous donors in our Annual Giving campaign who made the solar project possible! We have indeed, gone greener in 2019.

Our HS&E officer Karen Canton encouraged teachers to experience using a a real fire extinguisher in order to familiarise themselves with a realistic response, should they ever need to use one. Several new secure storage areas were also constructed across campus also, as well as a new office for Maintenance Manager Michael Thomson.

Casual shuttle bus from Middle Cove to Castlecrag has come to an end

Casual shuttle bus from Middle Cove to Castlecrag has come to an end

Dear Parents,

Sadly the casual shuttle bus service from Middle Cove to Castlecrag has come to an end. Due to increased numbers in After School Care and additional students booked on the bus service to the Inner West, there is very limited seating remaining. It is therefore not possible for us to fairly manage any additional travelers. The alternative options are for your child to take the school public bus: 668w or Public bus 207. Details are in the images below.

We are happy to show your children how to take these buses until they are comfortable remembering the new routine. Please just let us know. We have students who ride this bus regularly as well as our duty teachers dotted along the way to help keep everyone safe.

We would like to thank you all for your support and cooperation in managing this service over the past few years.

Kind Regards,

Admin Team

A busy term for Craft teacher Melanie Harper

A busy term for Craft teacher Melanie Harper

Term 3 is a rich one for craft, including the Glenaeon School Fair, Parent Craft, Class craft and some of the Silent Auction pieces to be sold at the school Fair in November. Elizabeth Ellean is on leave this term, so Craft teacher Melanie Harper is preparing Class 1 and 2 craft supplies at Castlecrag. She is also collecting pieces to display at the 'Meaningful Lives' Art Show at the Concourse and invites you to come and see the selective display of art and craft pieces from Kindergarten right through to Year 12.

Parent Craft

Parent Craft

Do you have a special crafting talent to share? Are you a Wet Felting Wizard? Crocheting Queen? Eco Dying Enthusiast? Please be in contact with Melanie Harper if you are able to run a one off afternoon/evening/ weekend workshop for parent crafters. Email: melanieh@glenaeon.nsw.edu.au

Parent Craft runs from 9am until 12pm Wednesdays this term in the Castlecrag hall kitchen room. All welcome. Stay for a short time or until you need to go. Small children are welcome - there are toys and an enclosed play/sandpit area and often a few little friends to make. All welcome, bring your unfinished craft projects, questions and enjoy some crafty company and a cup of tea.

Class 3 at work in the garden

Class 3 at work in the garden

Class 3 are seasoned gardeners, and returned from holidays to check and aerate the liquid fertiliser they prepared last Term. It is made from sorghum plants, which releases silica and other nutrients into the solution that is then sprinkled onto the plants. Here they are learning how to aerate the natural fertiliser in a hand-mixer that has been repurposed from the art and building department to the garden and will start a new life as a garden tool! Class 3 are also particularly fond of the chickens, and we are delighted to introduce the newest 3 hens Dot, Whitney and Olive. They get a LOT of cuddles when Class 3 are around!

Class 5 learn the traditional Maypole dance

Traditionally at Glenaeon, Class 5 dance the Maypole at the Spring Festival in a rhythmic and co-ordinated series of steps, whilst intricately weaving numerous ribbons into an impressive pattern.

This requires a lot of practice, which began this week in the amphitheatre under the guidance of Eurythmy teacher Clair Cisterne. They practise in two groups, which will later join together and form a 'whole class' presentation during the Spring Festival at end of Term 3.

Class 6 light up their world

As a part of their Main Lesson exploring the physics of sound, light and heat, Class 6 began the week by painting the colour wheel, exploring the qualities of colours with teacher Rodney Dean.

The vibrancy of the colours speaks for itself, and we can't wait to see them all up on display.

School Canteen - Gentle Cafe and Humming Cafe orders

School Canteen - Gentle Cafe and Humming Cafe orders

Both the School Canteen (Wed/Thur/Fri) and Humming Cafe (Mon/Tue) are available. Click below for the menu and the new information on how to order now from Humming Cafe. For Humming Cafe orders, students can just write their order, name and class on the brown bag and not on a separate piece of paper. This is to eliminate the extra unnecessary waste of paper and ink for ordering. Tomo at Humming agrees and is happy to have the orders come this way. The menu is printed up on the reception noticeboard and Sarah will put one near the basket every morning that Humming is open.

The school canteen operates at the Middle Cove campusfor Years 3-12. You can also find the menus on the School Stream app. To sign up to volunteer for a shift at the canteen, open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, go to https://signup.zone/glenaeon-canteen, and pick a shift that works for you. Hours are 9am-1pm and your child eats free on the day you are working! It’s fun and interesting to talk, cook and enjoy the bush setting we are surrounded by, come check it out! Warm regards, Sharon & Lorna. To order lunches in Classes 3-6, please send your child’s order in a paper bag. Please include the money for the item in the paper bag: it will help the canteen to have the exact amount in the bag, but it does not have to be exact, as the change will be sent back with the lunch. Children then need to place their lunch order in the basket outside their classroom. There are half sizes available for Classes 3 to 6, equivalent to a quarter baguette. Orders from Classes 3 to 6 will be sent down to the canteen in the morning, with the orders returned to the class at lunchtime, thus enabling these classes to maintain their important practice of sitting and sharing their meal together. (Class 3-6 will not be ordering morning tea or drinks from the canteen).

Humming Cafe provides delicious lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays for the Middle Cove campus. You can order daily using forms and a bag, put into the basket at reception before 9am. If you would like them to deliver a regular lunch on Mon/Tue, you can simply drop into the Humming Cafe and 'pre-book and pay' for a whole term's regular order (or however many weeks are left). It must be the same each week, and can be changed each term. There is no need then to fill in the order form and give to reception each week once this is done. This is the only way Class 3 are allowed to order from Humming Cafe this term. lunches are delivered at 12.50pm. Order forms are available at reception, on the School Stream app or behind the parent portal on the school website.

If you have damaged clothes you would like to recycle, there are two red collection bins in the Chatswood Westfield car park on the bottom (green) level at the western end. The clothes are collected and turned into rags for charity. If you are looking for warm clothes for the winter, the uniform shop has jumpers and sports jackets in various sizes as well as long pants.

Simple Sustainability - Glenaeon is committed to reducing waste

Simple Sustainability - Glenaeon is committed to reducing waste

DID YOU KNOW:

Nearly all plastic bottles can be recycled, however, most of the tops cannot!

Remove all plastic bottle tops before putting the actual bottle in the recycling bin – otherwise the air inside the bottle can cause problems at the recycling plant. When they’re crushed, the air cannot escape from the bottle and builds pressure.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to bottle tops/lids is to measure it against a business card – if it’s bigger than the card then put it in recycling if it’s smaller pop it in the trash. Bottle beer caps are too small to get collected in the recycling process, however, they can be recycled if they are placed inside a can of similar material. That way they can’t jam the machinery!

7. Interested to a country retreat near the Warrumbungle national park?
We offer a share of a wonderful mud brick house, outside the township of Coonabarabran on the way to the Warrumbungles National Park. The house was custom built by a local couple, brick by brick, using local clay and amazing recycled timbers. As the house itself is stunning for it’s individual character and very high standard workmanship, the location of the house is as impressive. It’s indigenous name “Illalangi” means “house on the hill”, overlooking with a 360 degree view the bushlands of the southern end of the majestic Pilliga forest and to the west the Warrumbungles mountains. The sunrises are as fascinating as the sunsets...and at night it feels as if one can touch the Milky Way. The main house comprises of a huge open plan living area, flooded by natural light all day. There are 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and separate toilet, a laundry and storage room and another toilet-house outside. There is also a smaller house where the original owners lived while building the big house. The little house can be easily updated into a permanent accommodation again. Around the house are beautifully landscaped gardens and an orchard with producing fruit trees and, currently dormant, commercial size garden beds for veggie growing. On title is bore water which has drinking quality. The are also two huge rain water tanks. The block of land has a size of almost 8 hectares.

We currently share this property on a 50:50 basis with friends. As our co-owners have moved on, a 50% share is available now.  If all this sounds interesting to you, then please let us know and come and stay a few days at this magical place ... and take it from there ... FUN FRENCH CLUB AT GLENAEON

When: The class is on a Monday afternoon from 3.45pm to 4.45pm

Lefrench teaching methodology:
Children just love the French Clubs fun approach to language learning which involves lots of games, songs, drama and other lively activities. You will be amazed at how much they learn and how quickly!

Lefrench Club's Methodology is based on informal, fun activities, such as crafts, music and songs, lively games, weekly activity sheets for each child, and progress reports for parents to reinforce at home (via email).

This interactive and communicative approach is supported by professionally designed materials including flashcards, board games and activity sheets.
The Club’s method makes learning fun and stress-free. While children play games, sing songs, act out role plays and interact with each other, they absorb the new language without consciously thinking about it. Naturally this all takes place within a carefully structured progressive sequence which enhances learning

Meaningful Lives

Meaningful Lives

This month marks the 100th anniversary of Dr Rudolf Steiner’s first training course for teachers as they prepared to open the world’s first school based on his methods. In September 1919 the school opened, and 100 years later we are enjoying the fruits of their pioneering labours.

Six years after this moment, the lectures of this first training course were published, and in the Foreword, Dr Steiner’s widow Marie Steiner summed up the essence of the complex, organic whole that is Steiner education with the classic words:

“Our highest endeavor is to produce young men and women who out of themselves are able to give meaning and direction to their own lives.”

How contemporary they now sound! At the time, schools were either based on the old, grammar school model of classical languages and learning, or the newer industrial model producing technical professionals and workers for industry. Many schools were founded on a religious base with the aim of producing more adherents loyal to that religion.

Here Dr Steiner is proclaiming an education that would foster individuals able to build their own meaning and direction out of themselves. He was founding a new education that was for the future, and that future is now, the 21st century.

Over the years Glenaeon has expressed the essence of our work and aspirations for our students with a motto. Unfolding Individual Journeys has been a valuable phrase expressing so much of who we are for the past decade. As we examined our work and curriculum, it became apparent that Marie Steiner had uniquely captured an essential statement of our aspirations as a school, one that lifted Unfolding Individual Journeys to a new level.

Every individual journey is unique and precious, but what makes each one most precious is when it has meaning and direction. Whether a bricklayer or a brain surgeon, such a life is a successful life, when the individual journey is owned and guided by the individual himself or herself, and not from without, but from within. Hence there was no better way of describing what we do and aspire to offer our community than…Meaningful Lives.

We felt this moment in the 21st century is right to own such a profound statement, and bring it into public view as our identity. Meaningful Lives is our new motto and this week we formally launched this strapline as part of our website redesign. On Tuesday there was a presentation to staff, and we celebrated the launch with a morning tea and a cake, with an official celebratory cake-cutting by students.

Over the coming weeks we will present in detail on how we build meaning and direction in our students in a structured curriculum underpinning everything we do, from Early Childhood to Year 12: each of our foundational programs Academic, Aesthetic, Artisan, Altruistic, and Active Wilderness contribute an essential element to the sense of meaning and direction.

As a first step I invite you to look at our new website at  www.glenaeon.nsw.edu.au .
