Parent Education - 'Motor Development and its Influence on Literacy and Numeracy' - talk by educator Jane Swain

Parent Education - 'Motor Development and its Influence on Literacy and Numeracy' - talk by educator Jane Swain

An evening talk with Jane Swain
on Thursday 8
th August 2019 at 7:30pm at Kamaroi Rudolf Steiner School

“The circuits of the brain that are used for mental action are the same ones that are used for physical action. . . . The movement of the body as a child matures is essential for the optimal development of memory, language, and learning.”

Harvard neuropsychologist, Dr. John Ratey, 2002.

Decades of brain research have validated the causative influence of motor development on cognitive development. In her work with children of all ages over many years, Jane has explored this topic as it relates to numeracy and literacy. She will bring concrete examples from her work, so that parents and teachers can go home equipped with new insights to support their children’s healthy development. Please view THE FLYER HERE.

Know Your Child

A morning lecture with Jane Swain on Friday 9th August 2019 at 9:15am

Have you ever noticed how one child thrives in a loud and bustling environment while another responds to the same situation by squeezing behind the sofa and covering up with a blanket?

Sensory experiences are very individual, and they change over time. We tend to expect that everyone else experiences sensation as we do, but this is not the case! Come learn the secret language of interesting, unusual and even perplexing behaviour and how behaviour may be your children's ways of meeting sensory needs. You will get to know your own children more fully as the unique individuals they are and ways to help them cope in a variety of sensory situations. Please view THE FLYER HERE.

Mermaids in the sandpit

Mermaids in the sandpit

Class 2 children have been extremely creative in the sandpit, turning it into an ocean of mermaids, turtles and craeatures!

Outside play and informal creativity are so important at this age, giving children the opportunity to not only socialise and work collaboratively, but to be creative together in ways that always inspire us at Glenaeon.

"Oh, Mummy!" What's happening in Class 5?!

Class 5 have just finished their Egypt Main Lesson with a class project - building a model from Egyptian History.

The classroom is filled with pyramids, mummies, chariots, costumes, tombs, gods, goddesses, warships and beautifully written projects and posters. The level of skill in their building is quite remarkable, and it was a very inspiring Main Lesson for the class.

Year 9 visit Warrah Specialist School

Year 9 visit Warrah Specialist School

Year 9 participated in their second visit to Warrah Specialist School today and really got a taste of some of the valuable work that goes on there.

They had a rewarding tour of the bio-dynamic farm where they also met the cows and alpaca and spent time with the residents and students of Warrah. Visiting the shop was a highlight, seeing the incredible produce and other goodies available to the community. They also learnt about the organic boxes available from their farm to our own community through weekly boxes that are delivered to Glenaeon Castlecrag campus. They got an appreciation of the cost of organic food and were pleased to spend their money on such worthy food. Meeting Richard then lead them to an important part of the day - staining and preparing planks for a beautiful deck being built for the community Centre on site. Following a shared lunch with 21 Warrah students, we played games on the beautiful oval where gaining treasure was the aim. Our students connected so well with Warrah students and both groups are keen to see each other again next term. - Donna Miller . See : http://www.warrah.org/warrah

School Canteen - Gentle Cafe and Humming Cafe orders

School Canteen - Gentle Cafe and Humming Cafe orders

Both the School Canteen (Wed/Thur/Fri) and Humming Cafe (Mon/Tue) are available. Click below for the menu and the new information on how to order now from Humming Cafe. For Humming Cafe orders, students can just write their order, name and class on the brown bag and not on a separate piece of paper. This is to eliminate the extra unnecessary waste of paper and ink for ordering. Tomo at Humming agrees and is happy to have the orders come this way. The menu is printed up on the reception noticeboard and Sarah will put one near the basket every morning that Humming is open.

The school canteen operates at the Middle Cove campusfor Years 3-12. You can also find the menus on the School Stream app. To sign up to volunteer for a shift at the canteen, open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, go to https://signup.zone/glenaeon-canteen, and pick a shift that works for you. Hours are 9am-1pm and your child eats free on the day you are working! It’s fun and interesting to talk, cook and enjoy the bush setting we are surrounded by, come check it out! Warm regards, Sharon & Lorna. To order lunches in Classes 3-6, please send your child’s order in a paper bag. Please include the money for the item in the paper bag: it will help the canteen to have the exact amount in the bag, but it does not have to be exact, as the change will be sent back with the lunch. Children then need to place their lunch order in the basket outside their classroom. There are half sizes available for Classes 3 to 6, equivalent to a quarter baguette. Orders from Classes 3 to 6 will be sent down to the canteen in the morning, with the orders returned to the class at lunchtime, thus enabling these classes to maintain their important practice of sitting and sharing their meal together. (Class 3-6 will not be ordering morning tea or drinks from the canteen).

Humming Cafe provides delicious lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays for the Middle Cove campus. You can order daily using forms and a bag, put into the basket at reception before 9am. If you would like them to deliver a regular lunch on Mon/Tue, you can simply drop into the Humming Cafe and 'pre-book and pay' for a whole term's regular order (or however many weeks are left). It must be the same each week, and can be changed each term. There is no need then to fill in the order form and give to reception each week once this is done. This is the only way Class 3 are allowed to order from Humming Cafe this term. lunches are delivered at 12.50pm. Order forms are available at reception, on the School Stream app or behind the parent portal on the school website.

FUN FRENCH CLUB AT GLENAEON

When: The class is on a Monday afternoon from 3.45pm to 4.45pm

Lefrench teaching methodology:
Children just love the French Clubs fun approach to language learning which involves lots of games, songs, drama and other lively activities. You will be amazed at how much they learn and how quickly!

Lefrench Club's Methodology is based on informal, fun activities, such as crafts, music and songs, lively games, weekly activity sheets for each child, and progress reports for parents to reinforce at home (via email).

This interactive and communicative approach is supported by professionally designed materials including flashcards, board games and activity sheets.
The Club’s method makes learning fun and stress-free. While children play games, sing songs, act out role plays and interact with each other, they absorb the new language without consciously thinking about it. Naturally this all takes place within a carefully structured progressive sequence which enhances learning

7. Interested to a country retreat near the Warrumbungle national park?
We offer a share of a wonderful mud brick house, outside the township of Coonabarabran on the way to the Warrumbungles National Park. The house was custom built by a local couple, brick by brick, using local clay and amazing recycled timbers. As the house itself is stunning for it’s individual character and very high standard workmanship, the location of the house is as impressive. It’s indigenous name “Illalangi” means “house on the hill”, overlooking with a 360 degree view the bushlands of the southern end of the majestic Pilliga forest and to the west the Warrumbungles mountains. The sunrises are as fascinating as the sunsets...and at night it feels as if one can touch the Milky Way. The main house comprises of a huge open plan living area, flooded by natural light all day. There are 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and separate toilet, a laundry and storage room and another toilet-house outside. There is also a smaller house where the original owners lived while building the big house. The little house can be easily updated into a permanent accommodation again. Around the house are beautifully landscaped gardens and an orchard with producing fruit trees and, currently dormant, commercial size garden beds for veggie growing. On title is bore water which has drinking quality. The are also two huge rain water tanks. The block of land has a size of almost 8 hectares.

We currently share this property on a 50:50 basis with friends. As our co-owners have moved on, a 50% share is available now.  If all this sounds interesting to you, then please let us know and come and stay a few days at this magical place ... and take it from there ... Sydney Youth Orchestra Auditions - an opportunity for your child

Sydney Youth Orchestra Auditions - an opportunity for your child

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Sydney Youth Orchestras program gives students the experience of playing great music in graded ensembles, as well as giving them the opportunity to meet students from other schools. I would highly recommend considering the organization if your child shows interest in orchestral playing and is keen to branch out! Please see the FLYER HERE

Thanks,

Meaningful Lives through Music

Meaningful Lives through Music

Our School Concert reminds us why we do music. Music brings beauty to our lives, it moves us, it gives expression to our feelings, and as such, it is meaningful. Everyone needs beauty, and meaning, and that’s why we do music, and why everyone does music at Glenaeon. All our students from Class 5 to Year 11, plus our Year 12 Music students, will be on stage on Friday August 9 and we invite you to be part of this entertaining and uplifting evening.

Without music, life is a journey through a desert.
– Pat Conroy (American writer)

Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.
- Pablo Casals

The legendary cellist Pablo Casals was on to something. Our lives need beauty, and poetry, to fulfil and enrich us, and to make meaning out of the myriad of what life brings us.

How do we build meaningful lives, how do we make meaning from all that comes to us in life? How do prepare our students to live and to love, in the deepest and broadest sense?

Music is one of the greatest of ways. We may not play at the highest standard nor appreciate the greatest of musical complexities. But we all need the flow, the harmony, the rhythm, the ineffable inner place where some melodies can take us. Just to be part of a choir, an ensemble or an orchestra should be a fundamental part of every child’s education, establishing a connection with the world of music that can then take root and flourish throughout the rest of life as a living form within us.

There is now a wealth of evidence demonstrating the positive impact of music on education and learning for children, so much so that a discussion on whether children should all learn music is out of date. We understand this argument, but at a human level, the debate could be said to be beyond evidence. It’s a given, a human need, and like food, water and air, music gives us nourishment. As Pat Conroy wrote, music makes the desert of life into a green and refreshing place.

Our annual Art Show is also on display at Art Space on The Concourse in Chatswood, and we invite all parents and friends of the school to join us for the official opening prior to the music concert on August 9. Drinks will be available from 5.30pm, so after you drop your child/ren off at the Stage Door, please come and join us officially to launch the show.

This year we are celebrating 100 years of Steiner Education, and worldwide celebrations are underway marking this significant milestone. Our Concert and Art Show are part of our local contributions to the international event known as Waldorf 100.
